Buxus, commonly known as box, was used in Roman villas both for hedging and for topiary, and it was the Romans who reintroduced buxus plants to England – reintroduced, because buxus had been growing in England long before Pliny extolled the plant. Pollen grains of buxus have been discovered in England that date back to 7,000 B.C.
The art of topiary would survive the dark ages to enjoy a revival during the reign of Henry VIII, when topiary of spheres, cones, urns and vases adorned Hampton Court. While these topiaries were mainly crafted from cypress, by the time Charles II came into power, buxus plants were being used. Topiary underwent another revival in the mid-1800s, which has continued to this day. As specimen container plants for the garden, or as a memorable gift, buxus topiaries are certain to delight.
Serenata is pleased to present buxus plants in a variety of topiary shapes, all available online and ready for prompt delivery. A variety of shapes are offered – balls, cubes, cones and spirals – all finely clipped and shaped to perfection, so that plants can be easily maintained with a minimum of pruning and care.
